Hardwood Floors in Northport, AL

Hardwood flooring is like no other type of flooring. Timeless and attractive hardwood floors have associated with luxury and elegance for centuries, but that doesn’t mean that its benefits are purely due to appearance. While hardwood requires an initial investment for materials, it can be refinished and remain looking like new for decades. Hardwood is considered a fairly low maintenance flooring option if sealed properly.

What Types of Hardwood Styles Can Be Found?

Hardwood flooring has an incredible variety of styles and appearances, from rustic hand-scraped Brazilian Cherry hardwood to modern, polished bamboo.

Hardwood flooring can even increase property values in a way that other flooring like carpeting does not. Many people find hardwood floors as an attractive option and will specifically seek out homes with them. Hardwood floors have been a mainstay for centuries for a reason.

A versatile and attractive surface, hardwood flooring always endures. When compared to other flooring options, hardwood may cost more but will usually yield substantial returns - both in terms of attractiveness and property values.

Solid Hardwood Floors Vs. Engineered Hardwood Floors

There are two types of hardwood flooring: solid and engineered. Solid hardwood and engineered hardwood look exactly alike.

Looks can be deceiving, though, because the two perform very differently. Learn more about each hardwood flooring type:

  • Solid hardwood flooring is a traditional style of the wood floor where each plank is made from a single, solid piece of wood. Each plank is typically ¾ inch thick and made entirely of premium hardwood. Since it’s completely solid throughout, you can often sand and refinish your solid hardwood floors to meet your ever-changing style needs. This eliminates scratches, stains, dents, and other imperfections. While solid hardwood is a beautiful flooring, it can be susceptible to warping in humid or moisture-prone environments. Due to this, we recommend installing your solid hardwood flooring in above-grade and non-moisture-prone rooms.

  • Engineered hardwood flooring is created from laminate layers. This layered design adds stability and prevents the wood from warping from moisture and humidity exposure. A natural hardwood veneer at the surface, meaning engineered and solid hardwood look identical from above. This type of hardwood is more affordable and durable. The only disadvantage to engineered hardwood is you can’t usually sand and refinish as often as solid wood. This depends on the quality and thickness of its top layer.

Where Can Hardwood Floors Be Installed?

Hardwood flooring is recommended for home settings where there isn't significant foot traffic and moisture.

Popular spots for hardwood floor installation include bedrooms and living rooms. Solid hardwood flooring is limited to being installed in on or above level rooms of your home.

Engineered hardwood flooring can be installed on all levels of your home including in a finished basement. It can also handle moderate foot traffic and can be installed in hallways and entryways.

A few things to keep in mind when selecting your new hardwood floors are:

  • Subfloor type and condition
  • Door height
  • Appliance clearance
  • Toilet flange
  • Transitions between other flooring types
