Learn About Hardwood Flooring

No other type of flooring is as timeless and attractive as hardwood. Hardwood flooring has been associated with luxury and elegance for centuries, but that doesn't mean that its benefits are purely due to its appearance. Here are some of the major benefits of hardwood flooring. Wheat’s Carpet One Floor & Home in Northport is your local source for all things hardwood flooring. Our flooring professionals are your hardwood experts and can help you find the best hardwood floor for your home.

Though hardwood may require an initial investment for materials, it can be refinished and remain looking like new over time. Hardwood is considered a fairly low maintenance option, as long as it is properly sealed, vacuuming and sweeping will keep it clean.

Hardwood Styles

Hardwood flooring has an incredible wealth of styles and appearances, from rustic hand-scraped Brazilian Cherry to modern, polished bamboo. Hardwood also increases property values in a way that options such as carpeting do not. Many people find hardwood floors an attractive option and will specifically seek out homes with them. Hardwood floors have been a mainstay for centuries for a reason. A versatile and attractive surface, a well-kept hardwood floor can last decades to come. When compared to other options, hardwood may cost more but will usually yield substantial returns -- both in terms of attractiveness and property values.

What Is The Difference Between Solid and Engineered Hardwood?

Solid hardwood is, just as its name describes, one solid piece of wood from top to bottom. Thickness typically varies, but on average you can choose from ¾” or 5/16”. Solid hardwood performs best when installed above or on grade, and can even be sanded and refinished multiple times during its lifetime. Engineered hardwood floors are made of multiple real wood veneers whose grains run in different directions in order to increase stability. This allows the floors to resist expanding and contracting during weather changes. Just like solid hardwood, engineered hardwood can be refinished as well but it depends on how thick the top layer is.

Where Can Hardwood Be Installed?

Hardwood is recommended for home settings where there isn't significant foot traffic and moisture. Popular spots for hardwood are bedrooms and living rooms. Solid hardwood is limited to being installed in on or above level rooms of your home. Engineered hardwood, however, can be installed on all levels of your home including in a finished basement. It can also handle moderate foot traffic and can be installed in hallways and entryways.
